This machine is ideal for allergy sufferers and pet owners.

GermGuardian AC4300BPTCA

The unique Pet Pure Treatment Filter prevents the growth of mold, mildew and bacteria on the filter by using antimicrobial agents. When the Pet Pure filter is combined with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter, the machine captures almost 99.97% of allergens associated with pets.

The charcoal filter has great odor control capabilities by activating the carbon layer when the particles are detected. That’s a good thing if you want a clean, fresh smelling home or office.

Besides controlling pet dander allergens and reducing odors, the third feature that makes this machine exceptional is its ability to combat airborne germs such as influenza, rhinovirus, staph and pneumonia. Studies have shown that using HEPA filters can reduce the ability of allergens to trigger indoor asthma attacks indoors.

Wait, there’s more. Another difference between this machine and the previous one is the clean air delivery rate, 110 versus 100. I’ll explain these numbers later in the buyer’s guide. With these features, this machine is ideal for allergy sufferers and for those who are dealing with asthma.

With a sleek, aesthetically-pleasing look and height of 28 inches, this is the tallest air purifier on my best home air purifiers list. As the name implies, it’s best suited for medium or large rooms and provides coverage protection of up to 199 square feet.

Weighing in at 11 pounds, the air purifier is unusually lightweight considering its height. This unit comes with 5 fan speed settings, an 8 hour timer function, and a 5-year limited warranty, the longest warranty out of all the machines on our best home air purifiers list.

GermGuardian AC5350B 28-Inces Room Air Purifier

Rounding out the hat-trick of GermGuardian machines on my list is the GermGuardian AC4100 3-in-1 Desktop Air Purifier.

As its name suggests, this little guy is best suited for small spaces such as an office or dorm room. In terms of its size, it’s the smallest unit reviewed on my best home air purifiers list.

GermGuardian AC4100 Desktop

Although the runt of the GermGuardian litter, the unit still contains many of the same features as its bigger siblings on our list.

The HEPA filter can capture and reduce dust and allergens, it has a UV light that eradicates germs, and its charcoal filter controls smelly odors with aplomb.

Beautiful and well designed with a silver finish, this unit looks very stylish in any room or small space.

The unit measures 7 x 6 x 10 inches and weighs in at almost 5 pounds, making it portable and ideal to take with you.

GermGuardian AC4100

It comes with three main fan settings- low airflow, medium airflow, and high airflow, and when placed on the low setting, runs very quiet. So what, you ask? Well that’s perfect if you want it on at night while sleeping.

  • Sleek silver color and design
  • Inexpensive price
  • Back nob assists in filter replacement reminder
  • Inexpensive filters

Last but not least, the final review on our list is the Blue Pure 211+ Air Purifier 3 Stage with Two Washable Pre-Filters.

The unique feature of this machine is that the washable pre-filters are available in a variety of colors. That’s a big deal if you want to match or complement the décor of the room it’s placed in as no other product on our best home air purifiers list offers that.

While fashion may be important for some, those looking for the best air purifiers to buy are more likely interested in function over form. Fortunately, this machine comes loaded with several nice features:

• The unit has a 3-part filtration system that can capture 99% of pollutants such as allergens, smoke, odors, mold spores, dust mites and others. An activated carbon layer removes common odors from smoking, pets and other sources.

• The unit runs at a lower noise level even when operating at a high fan speed setting.

• A one-button control, designed to be user-friendly, makes it easy to select 3 different fan speeds.

• When the unit is on its highest fan setting, electricity output measures only 60 watts, making it more energy efficient than other comparably priced systems.

The machine measures 13 x 13 x 20 inches, weighs about 13 pounds, and is ideal for medium to large rooms such as the kitchen, living room or large bedroom. With area coverage of 400 to 600 feet, this machine provides the largest coverage for all the machines on our best home air purifiers list.

Blue Pure 211+ Air Purifier

With these features it’s no wonder that this air purifier is the most expensive on my best home air purifiers list. While the $250 price tag may seem pricey to some, when combined with the ability to personalize how it looks, its energy efficiency, its low noise levels, and its room coverage size, it’s easy to see why this unit makes it onto my list.

  • Ability to personalize the color
  • Low power consumption
  • No beeping or other sounds other than airflow noise
  • Easy right out of the box setup

  • Pricey
  • Noticeable odd smell when unit is initially operated
  • No warranty information included

The Buyers Guide – How to Decide on The Right Air Purifier For You

People looking to buy an air purifier, like those on our best home air purifiers list, will usually do their research before buying.

But with so many choices and features, it’s easy to see why some are totally overwhelmed and confused. Fortunately, I’ve included this buyer’s guide for those who can’t, or don’t know how to decide.

Why Do You Need an Air Purifier?

There are many reasons why you want to buy a home air purifier, here are a few.

• New homeowners usually buy one because they want to get rid of formaldehyde that’s present in newly built homes.
• You may want an air purifier to fight mold, especially if you live in areas with high humidity.
• If you’re living with a smoker, you may want one to combat second-hand smoke and fight odors.
• Air purifiers are further useful in fighting germs and bacteria and can help if you easily get sick or have a loved one sensitive to germs and prone to illness.
• For pet lovers, an air purifier is helpful for allergies and getting rid of pet dander.
• Another reason to buy is to eliminate house odors, from dirty diapers, body sweat, or cooking smells, which come from day-to-day living.
• Finally, you might want an air purifier because you’ve heard of the long-term benefits associated with breathing clean air on a daily basis.
• There are other reasons we may have missed, but the ones listed are usually good enough reasons to buy one.

How Big is the Room You Want the Air Purifier to Clean?

Once you’ve decided on the reasons for wanting an air purifier, think about where it will be placed.

Will it go in a large room like the living room, kitchen or basement? Or perhaps you want one in your bedroom, small office or a dorm room. Your buying decision will be influenced by the size of the area where you are placing your new purifier.

If you know the square footage of the area to be covered, you can narrow your search by coverage.

If you scroll through our reviews (above) you will note that we include the size of the area each unit is able to purify. You just want to make sure that the air purifier you’re thinking of buying can fully clean the area of the room in which you’ll be placing it.

One thing to keep in mind – a floor plan layout may affect the coverage area of the air purifier.

Air Purifier Buying Guide

What do I mean by that?

Take, for example, a room with a more open floor plan.

If you are looking to purify the air in the living room, and the living room area is wide open to the entryway and dining room, your purifier will be less effective as you move toward those areas.

The purification is also affected by the airflow in your open floor plan. Tall furniture pieces and screen dividers do change the direction of the air captured and dispersed by your unit.

If you encounter a floor plan consideration, it’s best to contact the manufacturer for coverage advice.

Clearing the Air/Killing Germs/Capturing Allergens

You also want to look at how effective the air purifier is in combating pollution.

I briefly mentioned the term Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR). This is a measurement how much clean air flows from an air purifier, filtered of pollutants such as dust, smoke and pollen.

The CADR number gives different ranges for each of the three. Here’s an explanation:

The range for dust is from 10 to 400 CADR. Pollen CADR ranges between 25 and 450. For tobacco smoke, the CADR range is from 10 to 450.

So, an air purifier being sold might list a CADR rating for smoke of 225, pollen for 220, and dust of 210. It’s possible that a machine may only have a CADR for one or two pollutants at most.

When deciding on which air purifier to buy, look for the CADR category which is most important for you.

Another factor to consider is the types of filter used.

Some machines only use one type of filter and may only combat dust or mold. Others might use a combination of filters to fight against germs, reduce smells, or capture allergens.

Still not clear?

Consider that a HEPA filter catches 99.97% of allergens such as pollen or pet dander. However, a charcoal filter is used to reduce common odors from pets, smoking or cooking.

If you buy an air purifier that uses different types of filters in combination (HEPA + charcoal), it makes sense that you’ll have a more effective machine.

How Much Will It Cost?

The cost of a good quality air purifier, for most homes, ranges on average from $50 to as high as $1500.

That’s a big difference, right?

Remember though, the range varies because air purifiers differ in some of the features they offer, their size, etc.

But when we speak of costs, we usually focus solely on purchase price and forget that maintenance and operating costs play a part as well.

For example, you buy an inexpensive air purifier, but the machine comes with higher operating costs in the form of higher monthly electric bills, or maintenance costs because you are constantly changing the filters.

Compare that with buying a more expensive air purifier, all things being equal in terms of size and features, that has lower operating costs because it is energy efficient, and lower maintenance expenses because you’re not changing filters very often.

Higher end models are usually less likely to break down, and therefore have lower repair costs than the cheaper models as well.

Your health is everything; air purifiers are a smart choice in improving the quality of air in your home and benefit your health.

I hope that my best home air purifiers list will help you choose the air purifier that’s right for you. For those of you who don’t know how to choose one or where to begin, I trust this buying guide has helped you as well.

If you believe there are other air purifiers that I missed and should be on the best home air purifiers list, or if you think there are other criteria that should be included in my buyer’s guide I invite you to leave a comment below.
